  News Release

The following is a news release from the Oregon Teacher Standards and Commission. If there are more details that we can provide for you, please feel free to contact us (see Contact Us).

Expired Licenses and Teaching Out of Field
Released: Monday, May 4, 2009 at 5:00 PM

Recently the Commission directed staff to investigate nearly 30 licensees or charter school-registered educators with expired licenses/registrations or with a record of working outside of their licensed or registered field. The investigations will be to determine whether the educators violated professional standards by working without a valid license.

The Commission investigative staff will review the role of the licensed educator and the role of the licensed administrator responsible for the employment of an unlicensed or seriously inappropriately licensed educator's presence in any Oregon classroom.

These investigations also include charter schools and their educators and administrators.

It is an ethical violation to work without a valid license. It is an ethical violation to assign an educator knowingly in violation of licensure rules. Given the readily available information on the Web regarding the scope of licenses and their expiration dates, the Commission believes that the burden is on the educator and the administrator to prove to the Commission why they should not be disciplined. Violators will be contacted in the next several weeks. If you have any questions, please contact Melody Hanson, Director of Professional Practices at: (503) 373-1260.
